講題: Nanostructured metasurfaces for applications from ultrafast to quantum

Abstract:

Diffractive optical elements allow to control light in a versatile way. However, often the strong wavelength dependence of their diffractive properties are challenging for the design of optical systems. Here we provide an overview of recent developments to construct diffractive optical elements from photonic metasurfaces, which themselves have strong wavelength dependent properties. This enables novel optical elements that rely on photonic nanostructures, which are combined with diffractive and refractive effects to achieve unprecedented functionality. The control of dispersion relies on resonant excitations of photonic nanostructures, e.g. surface plasmon polaritons or Mie-like resonances or BIC states, which strongly enhance the light-matter interactions at sub-wavelength scales and give rise to nonlinear effects.


Over the last years, photonic metasurfaces have therefore advanced from a field of curiosity driven basic research to applied research and development, targeting novel solutions for optical system design. In this context, engineering of the light shaping properties of metasurfaces became the major goal. For such engineering processes, it is important to have a large number of degrees of freedom, which can be employed in the design of the metasurfaces in order to tailor their properties to the specific requirements of the addressed application.


In my presentation I will introduce some of the underlying concepts and show examples of the recent advances with applications ranging from quantum imaging to ultrafast XUV imaging.


If time permits, I would also like to introduce the international education programs of the Abbe School of Photonics founded at FSU Jena, Germany to you.


Short bio:

Thomas Pertsch is a professor of applied physics and one of the founding directors of the Abbe Center of Photonics (www.acp.uni-jena.de) at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany, where he leads the "Nano- and Quantum Optics Group” at the Institute of Applied Physics.


Currently, his research focus is on the generation and interaction of light with nanostructured matter, which includes e.g. metamaterials, photonic crystals and integrated quantum optical devices. In teaching, as the speaker of the Abbe School of Photonics (www.asp.uni-jena.de) and Fellow of the Max Planck School of Photonics, he is committed to the internationalization of research-related photonics education in Germany. He teaches mainly in the field of photonics and computational physics.
